Halo Studios Enhances The Outer Worlds 2 Gunplay

The Outer Worlds 2, set to release on October 29, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, has received a significant boost in its first-person shooter mechanics thanks to collaboration with Halo Studios, formerly 343 Industries. Obsidian Entertainment, known for RPGs like Fallout: New Vegas, recognized the original 2019 game’s gunplay as a weak point, often criticized for feeling stiff and repetitive. To address this, game director Brandon Adler revealed in a Guardian interview that Obsidian sought expertise from Halo Studios, the team behind Halo 4, 5, and Infinite. Halo Studios provided a detailed list of recommendations, guiding Obsidian to refine weapon configurations, ensuring each gun feels unique and satisfying. Additionally, Obsidian conducted an in-depth analysis of Bungie’s Destiny, aiming to emulate its responsive and impactful gunplay. The result is a diverse arsenal with improved feedback, unique recoil, reload animations, and customizable mods, allowing players to tailor weapons for varied playstyles, from guns-blazing to stealth, in the new Arcadia star system setting.
Dynamic Combat and RPG Roots in Arcadia

The Outer Worlds 2 builds on its RPG foundations while elevating combat with Halo-inspired refinements and Destiny-like mobility, such as sprint-sliding and double-jumping, as showcased in a 30-minute hands-on demo at Summer Game Fest 2025. Players can expect creative weapons like a quad-barrel ice-crusted shotgun and a goo pistol, alongside a revamped enemy AI that uses cover and broader combo options for dynamic firefights. The game retains Obsidian’s signature branching narrative and perk system, inspired by Fallout: New Vegas, with over 90 perks and a Flaws system adding depth to character builds. Seamless exploration without loading screens for buildings enhances immersion in Arcadia’s diverse planets. With Fallout creator Tim Cain consulting and Halo Studios’ input, the sequel aims to balance polished gunplay with deep RPG elements, addressing fan feedback while pushing boundaries.
