Overwatch 2’s game director, Aaron Keller, discussed 6v6, Hazard’s performance, holiday-themed cosmetics, and 2024 competitive rewards in the latest Director’s Take. Keller’s blog post teases Overwatch 2’s 6v6 comeback, something players have wanted since 5v5.
Overwatch 2’s greatest change is its inclusion of 5v5 matches instead of 6v6. 5v5 matches emphasize teamwork and fast-paced action by removing tanks from each team. Some Overwatch 2 players hoped the 6v6 variant would return after this adjustment. Overwatch 2 brought back 6v6 as a time-limited game option, changing hero powers to allow 2 tanks, 2 supports, and 2 DPS.
In his newest Director’s Take, Aaron Keller revealed Overwatch 2’s 6v6 potential. The game director said Overwatch 2 will have an experimental 6v6 mode later this year, but he wouldn’t commit to its future. This new 6v6 mode will work like Quick Play Hacked, allowing up to three heroes of a single role on a team as long as there is at least one in each role. This rule would prevent players from using the GOAT team composition but let them play the 6v6 game style that made Overwatch popular in 2016.
The prospects for 2025 and the future of 6v6 in Overwatch 2
Aaron Keller hinted at these 6v6 adjustments and offered criticism of Hazard’s play. Although the new hero was well-liked by players, he said, the Overwatch 2 team had to alter several of his skills to improve Hazard’s win rates in Season 14 throughout his trial weekend. With the premiere of the first season of 2025, Keller hinted at impending changes to competitive games but hasn’t yet provided any additional details.
A special in-game Christmas challenge allows players to get free wintery cosmetics while they wait for additional details on the future of 6v6 in Overwatch 2 and the next competitive season. New Overwatch 2 Twitch drops are available to commemorate the holiday season, with player icons to collect, legendary skins, charms, and themed sprays. Players may still obtain additional cosmetics in Overwatch 2 during the Avatar: The Last Airbender event, which runs through December 30.
