To celebrate Returnal‘s fourth anniversary, developer Housemarque has released a new update featuring official support for the PlayStation 5 Pro. The latest patch enhances the game’s visuals on Sony’s upgraded console, delivering up to 2.5 times more pixels for a sharper, higher-resolution experience.
Originally released in 2021, Returnal quickly gained recognition as one of the standout titles on the PS5, thanks to its blend of intense third-person shooting and roguelike mechanics. Despite its notoriously tough difficulty, the game has maintained a loyal fanbase. With the arrival of this PS5 Pro update, longtime players have an even greater incentive to dive back into its challenging, fast-paced action.
Returnal Gets Enhanced Update for PS5 Pro Support

Housemarque is celebrating Returnal’s fourth anniversary by releasing a new update that brings official support for the PlayStation 5 Pro. Announced via Twitter, the update is now available and boosts the game’s resolution by delivering up to 2.5 times more pixels on the upgraded console. While specific patch notes weren’t provided, the visual enhancements alone give PS5 Pro owners a compelling reason to revisit the acclaimed roguelike shooter.
Last year’s third-anniversary celebration came in the form of a graphic novel titled Returnal: Fallen Asteria, developed in collaboration with Dark Horse Comics. Although fans were hoping for news of a sequel or DLC, the novel offered a deeper dive into the game’s mysterious universe instead.
Returnal now joins a growing list of titles receiving performance upgrades for the PS5 Pro, including Forza Horizon 5, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. With further advancements in the PS5 Pro’s PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) feature expected in 2026, the console continues to establish itself as the premier platform for enhanced gaming experiences.

Though the latest update didn’t include new content, Housemarque has been busy with other projects. Earlier this year, the studio revealed a new IP titled Saros, described as the “ultimate evolution” of Housemarque’s gameplay philosophy. While it shares Returnal‘s roguelike structure, Saros introduces permanent upgrades and evolving weapons, offering a fresh take on the genre.
