The 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX has been celebrated with a variety of merchandise and Japanese-exclusive mobile game collaborations, including plushes, music boxes, and a Vivi-themed picture book slated for a 2026 localization. These festivities aim to honor the beloved RPG, bringing new 3D character models and high-resolution cutscene “movies” to fans through various tie-ins. Despite these celebratory efforts, a sense of anticipation remains for two significant, yet unconfirmed, projects that have overshadowed the current announcements, leaving fans eager for more concrete news.
Two major projects, an animated series from Cyber Group Studios, first announced in June 2021, and a rumored remake, previously appearing in the Nvidia GeForce Now database leak, were notably absent from the anniversary reveals. While Square Enix appears to be extending the anniversary window into 2026, there are no confirmed release dates or even official updates on these highly anticipated endeavors. This lack of information has left many fans wondering about the future of these projects, as their non-appearance has become a dominant topic amidst the ongoing anniversary celebrations.
